Rosatom building non-nuclear icebreakers to operate in the Arctic

10 september 2024

Rosatom plans to begin construction of two non-nuclear icebreakers, one of which will be named Kaliningrad, said Alexey Likhachev, CEO of the state corporation. Funds were provided for the construction of the Kaliningrad back in January, and the second vessel will be laid down in 2025.

"Three icebreakers are already operating in the waters of the Northern Sea Route, we are waiting for one by the end of this year, and another in 2026. And two more - a decision has been made on construction. We laid one down in January, it will be called Kaliningrad, the next one will be laid down in 2025," Likhachev said.

To date, Rosatom is implementing a project for the construction of icebreakers of the 22220 series. They are designed for wiring and towing ships and other structures in ice and on clean water, nia14.ru reports.
