Russia plans to create sea and river hubs in the Arctic for the development of cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route (NSR), Deputy Head of the Ministry of Regional Development of Russia Gadzhimagomed Huseynov said.
According to him, the Ministry is currently working on this project.
"The creation of marine hubs [is expected] first, and then river hubs is a priority on the Northern Sea Route. This issue is currently being worked out. First of all, it is the coastal infrastructure for access to the NSR within the framework of the plan," he said.
Earlier, the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport and the Rosatom State Corporation agreed to create hubs on the Ob, Irtysh, Lena and Yenisei rivers in order to expand cargo transportation along these routes.
The infrastructure will be developed throughout the NSR, including the port of Pevek. New ports may be built near Tiksi, which is part of the Arctic zone, reports fedpress.ru.
