Russia and China may cooperate in the Arctic in three key areas - expert

25 september 2024

Cooperation between Russia and China in the Arctic zone can focus on three main areas: science, innovation and interpersonal contacts, said Russian Ambassador, Vice President of Polar Explorers of Russia and Goodwill Ambassador of the Northern Forum Anton Vasiliev.

"Russia and China have excellent prospects for bilateral cooperation on Arctic issues. I think that today there are perfect conditions for the inclusion of Chinese provinces, primarily the northeastern ones, in the Northern Forum, and we will also be glad to see the entry of new Chinese universities and research organizations. We can move forward in three areas: science, innovation, and people-to-people contacts," Vasiliev said at the Russia-China interregional dialogue held at the V Northern Forum in Yakutsk.

Vasiliev also noted the importance of joint work on political and socio-economic issues, as well as the climate change in the Arctic zone.

The V Northern Forum on Sustainable Development is being held in Yakutsk on September 24-27. The main topic of the forum is the issues of ensuring the resilience of the Arctic regions, the search for optimal solutions and recommendations to improve the quality of life in the northern regions. This year, more than 500 experts from 10 countries are participating in the forum, according to tass.ru.
