Scientists at the Siberian Institute of Physics and Technology have developed a unique shape-memory alloy that can be used in the extreme climate of the Far North.
The new compound is made in a form of three-component single crystals of nickel, cobalt and aluminum - CoNiAl. The alloy can change its size by 12% under mechanical action, and then restore its former shape again.
The new material can become a base for the production of safe Arctic icebreakers. In addition to shipbuilding, it can also be used to extinguish fires. The alloy has been successfully tested for 100 deformation cycles and is being prepared for thousands of tests, hibiny.ru reported.
