Largest container ship to date escorted along Northern Sea Route

10 october 2024

Russia’s Glavsevmorput carried out the escort of the Flying Fish 1 vessel, the largest container ship in the history of the Northern Sea Route, b-port.com reports.

The ship left the port of St. Petersburg for the Chinese port of Qingdao. Flying Fish 1 is 294 meters long, with 664 twenty-foot containers and 1,727 forty-foot containers on board (a total of 40,966 tons of cargo).

The vessel crossed the border of the Northern Sea Route in the area of Cape Desire and left near Cape Dezhnev.

"The escort of large vessels, which, accordingly, have a large draft, implies sailing only on deep-sea routes. The navigation route of the container ship was developed at Glavsevmorput in accordance with this condition and with the ice situation that was developing and predicted at the time of passage. The container ship successfully passed the Northern Sea Route in almost six days with an average speed of 15.5 knots," said Sergey Zybko, head of Glavsevmorput.
