Shipbuilders complete building hull of nuclear icebreaker Chukotka

18 october 2024

Engineers at the Baltic Plant have completed the build of the hull of the universal nuclear icebreaker Chukotka (Project 22220) and are preparing the vessel for launching, which is scheduled for the end of October.

The maximum load on the icebreaker during operation in ice conditions is at its ice belt with a width of three meters. To ensure its extra strength, the sections in this part of the nuclear-powered vessel are assembled from specific grade of steel with a thickness of 45 mm. The 178-ton stem, which is part of the enlarged block of the bow tip of the Chukotka, will make it possible to break through ice up to three meters thick.

The universal nuclear icebreakers of the 22220 project are the largest and most powerful icebreaking vessels in the world. Their main task is to ensure year–round navigation in the western Arctic region, b-port.com reports.
