US concerned about cooperation between Russia and China in the Arctic

05 november 2024

The Washington administration is alarmed by Russia and China's increasing cooperation in the Arctic and is closely monitoring the situation, says US Special Representative for Arctic Affairs, Michael Sfraga.

According to him, the "frequency and complexity" of cooperation between Moscow and Beijing in the Arctic in the military sphere is a "wake-up call."

Sfraga drew attention to the fact that in July, aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces and the Air Force of the People's Liberation Army of China conducted joint air patrols. In October, a Russian-Chinese ship group passed through the Bering Strait.

The US Department of Defense has previously published an updated strategy for the Arctic. It follows that the Arctic, in the context of geopolitical and climatic changes, is becoming a region of strategic confrontation for the United States.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova previously stated that this strategy confirms the intention of the United States to solve the future of the region by force, TASS reminds.
