Russia to accelerate development of Arctic technologies

26 november 2024

Russia needs to accelerate the development of domestic technologies in the field of drilling, exploration, construction of ships and shipyards, and Arctic infrastructure, said Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yuri Trutnev.

"The withdrawal of a number of foreign companies from the market has created the need to maintain the operability of existing foreign machinery and equipment, create our own product lines, accelerate the development of domestic technologies in the field of drilling, exploration, construction of ships and shipyards, Arctic infrastructure and a number of others. <...> The work will continue. However, I consider it necessary to note that in order to maintain our dominant position in the Arctic, we need to act faster," Trutnev said.

He also noted that the competition for Arctic territories is growing, including its military potential. "In such a situation, any lag in our technological development will be used by our opponents as a competitive advantage," the Deputy Prime Minister explained.

According to him, in order to transform scientific and technological developments into digital and engineering solutions, the Ministry of Eastern Development of Russia organized the Arktek - Arctic Technology Competition.

The first Arktek competition was held in 2023 as part of Russia's chairmanship of the Arctic Council with the participation of the Eastern Center for State Planning, the Ministry of Regional Development of Russia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and the Roscongress Foundation.

The partners of the competition are large industrial, service and research companies operating in the Arctic, tass.ru reports.
