Canadian premiers visit Washington to push back against US policy

14 february 2025

All 13 of Canada's territorial premiers have visited Washington DC for the first time in history as a diplomatic countermeasure against US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose steep tariffs on Canadian goods.

"The people of the north are the ones asserting Canada's sovereignty," said Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson in Washington on Thursday.

This week, Trump has signed an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States, including Canadian products.

In addition, he voiced multiple remarks about potential absorbing Canada and Danish autonomous territory Greenland into US to increase US presence in the Arctic and gain access to its resources.
