More than 3 billion rubles a year should be invested in the cities of the Arctic zone of Russia to form a supporting urban environment, TASS quotes Murmansk Region Governor Andrei Chibis as saying.
He also stated that in order to implement the development goals for Russian Arctic, it is necessary to finally determine the volume of financing and its sources, including for the full provision of the nuclear icebreaker fleet.
Chibis explained that the Northern Sea Route is not only the most important logistics route in the Arctic, but also a fringe which "ensures national security and protects northern borders" of Russia, where important mineral resources are located that are necessary for economic development.
