Difficult ice conditions to remain on NSR this summer

01 april 2025

This summer, difficult ice conditions will persist on the Northern Sea Route (NSR), the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute said.

According to scientists, from June to August 2025, the most difficult ice conditions are expected in the eastern part of the East Siberian Sea, the southwestern part of the Chukchi Sea and in the Long Strait along the Chukchi coast.

"Favorable ice conditions are expected in the Barents Sea. The iciness of the southeastern region of the sea, where the main navigation routes pass, is expected to be 8% - 10% less than the long-term average values, and the area is expected to be completely ice-free in late May and early June," the researchers note.
