Finland to start discussions on opening border with Russia no earlier than in late 2025

03 april 2025

The opening of the Finnish-Russian border is not yet expected, Ilta Sanomat portal reports.

It is noted that the Finnish authorities may only open the border after the decision of the European Union on relations with Russia. This may happen no earlier than the end of 2025.

The border may begin to open in stages. Cargo transportation will begin first and then restrictions on the movement of diplomats will be lifted, the newspaper's source said.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that the country needs to "mentally prepare" for the resumption of relations with Russia. At the same time, the restoration of relations depends on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
