The Republic of Korea plans to launch a test voyage of a container ship along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in September 2026, said Park Jung Ho, the president of the Korean-Russian Business Council.
"Cooperation with Russia on this route has become a national project. Therefore, a test voyage is currently being organized at the government level in September of this year. As currently planned, it will be a container ship with a capacity of 30 TEU," he said.
Jung Ho reported that this year, the South Korean government also plans to launch a program to build ice-class container ships with a capacity of 8,000 TEU. Their operation will begin in 2030, and they are intended to increase the volume of transit shipments along the NSR.
