As part of its biodiversity conservation initiative, Nornickel conducted an expedition to clean the bottom of Lake Lama on the Putarano Plateau in the Arctic zone of Russia.
"Biodiversity conservation is our systematic work, which Nornickel plans to continue as part of a long-term ten-year program. We view this participation as our contribution to ecosystem restoration and a conscious, voluntary investment. What makes this project unique is that most of the divers are our company employees who decided to participate in the expedition on their days off. Their hobby, which is quite unusual, especially in the Arctic, benefits the nature," noted Nornickel vice president Evgeny Fedorov.
Lake Lama is located approximately 120 km east of Norilsk and is home to approximately 20 species of fish. The lake is part of the protected area of the Putarano Nature Reserve.
Nornickel launched a ten-year biodiversity conservation program in 2026. The project includes ecosystem monitoring and support for nature reserves.
The program's development took into account UN international goals, Russian environmental benchmarks, and scientific recommendations. Nornickel's environmental strategy enshrines the goal of zero net loss of biodiversity.
