Russia plans to open its Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor, which includes the Northern Sea Route (NSR), for year-round navigation, Russia’s president said.
According to the head of state, the NSR is designed to "ensure the flexibility and security of international supplies, open new opportunities for transit and coastal shipping, and ensure uninterrupted northern supplies to Arctic regions" amid the challenging global situation and the risk to global shipping.
The NSR is a shipping route and the main maritime communication channel in the Russian Arctic. It runs along Russia's northern coast through the seas of the Arctic Ocean. The NSR stretches 5,600 km from the Kara Strait to the Providence Bay.
