Organized Synthetics

18 february 2016

(Rapaport) - The natural diamond trade should welcome the establishment of the International Grown Diamond Association (IGDA) announced last week even though it may actually serve as a wake-up call for the industry. For years, the diamond-industry leadership bemoaned a lack of formal communication with their counterparts in the synthetic – or lab-grown – space to resolve issues that weigh down both sectors. Chief among the list of concerns is the threat of undisclosed synthetics being mixed into parcels of natural diamonds. Hopefully, the IGDA will provide such a forum. One can only hope the IGDA will self-regulate as much as the natural diamond industry does, and incorporate the requirements for disclosure and documentation into its mandate. After all, a synthetic diamond found to be sold as a natural diamond also diminishes consumer confidence in its product.

CVD Lab-Grown Diamonds with GIA Natural Diamond Certificates

17 february 2016

(IDEX Online News) – Alibaba, the leading online internet platform for global wholesale trade, has sent special Trade Alerts by email to millions of potential diamond buyers, offering CVD Lab-Grown Diamonds with GIA Natural Diamond Certificates as one of its Top Products of the Week. This offer is a blatant – and ostensibly fraudulent – attack on the Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) product integrity. Made on behalf of a New Delhi-based supplier of synthetic diamonds and gem simulants, the offer is akin to selling a fake Rolex watch with a genuine Rolex certificate of authenticity and guarantee.

Moody's lowers Anglo credit to junk status

16 february 2016

(miningmx.com) – Moody's Investors Service downgraded Anglo American's long-term credit rating to sub-investment grade saying the UK group faced a more uncertain deleveraging period than expected. It added that restructuring plans - due to be unveiled in more detail on February 16 at Anglo's full-year results presentation - would not necessarily provide the debt relief than initially anticipated. Anglo's senior unsecured ratings of Anglo American and its subsidiaries were lowered to Ba3 from Baa3 while the company's Baa3 long-term issuer rating was converted into a Ba3 corporate family rating "... in line with the rating agency's practice for corporates with non-investment-grade ratings", Moody's said. "Pending further announcements by the company, the rating agency believes that divestments of non-core assets would be difficult to execute in the current environment, particularly at valuations to allow deleveraging from the current level," it said.
