The Industry’s Russia Crisis: The Importance of Alrosa
02 march 2023
(rapaport.com) - The diamond market has yet to feel the full effect of the war in Ukraine. Initial predictions pointed to a potential supply shortage that would result from having Alrosa, with its large share of global rough production, off the market. However, those scarcities have not emerged significantly. This might be because the industry is still adjusting to the impact of US sanctions placed on Alrosa as the world will mark the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24. PGMs Outlook: Supply deficit tightens South Africa’s growth potential
01 march 2023
(miningreview.com) - South Africa has more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves and is one of the world’s largest producers of PGMs. These metals are used in an extensive range of diverse applications and industries, both existing and unexplored, ranging from the automotive sector, and electric fuel cell technology to luxury goods. Platinum is one of the rarest metals in the world with distinctive qualities, making it high value across several diverse demand segments. Its unique physical and catalytic properties have established its usefulness in industrial applications. At the same time, its unique precious metal attributes have made it the premier jewellery metal. The global platinum market size was valued at US$7.30 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach US$11.45 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 5.13% from 2022 to 2030. However, in Davis’s view, South Africa is likely to miss the opportunity to leverage its demand.

"If we don't reach a win-win situation, each side will have to pack up and go home," President Masisi said last Sunday in his home village of Moshupa (African News, 13 February 2023). His public demand for a fairer share of the profits from De Beers finally brings into the open a claim that has, until now, remained behind the closed doors of negotiating rooms.
India's Home-Grown Diamonds
24 february 2023
(idexonline.com) - India cuts and polishes the vast majority of the world's diamonds. But without its own mines, it's never been able to capture the full cycle of production - until now. The increasing popularity of lab growns, and the apparent enthusiasm of India's government to promote their domestic manufacture, is changing that. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman scrapped a five per cent import tax on the seeds from which diamonds are grown in her annual budget last week. She also announced a grant to fund five years of research and development to help India produce its own diamond seeds and become less reliant on imports.
