Diamond conference offers soul-searching opportunity

28 october 2014

(The Zimbabwe Independent) - Reports say Zimbabwe’s Marange diamonds have potential to make the country the third largest diamond producer by 2020 and potentially supply 25% of global demand, earning the economy up to US$2 billion annually. This is despite indications Marange diamond fields have been exhausted in terms of alluvial deposits and can only be sustained through kimberlite exploration and mining. The upcoming 2014 Zimbabwe Diamond Conference, to be held between November 6 and 7 in Harare, is seen as a grand opportunity for frank dialogue on challenges affecting the diamond industry with a view to devise pragmatic solutions that are quickly implemented.

Anglo Needs More Than Diamonds to Sparkle

(The Wall Street Journal) - Anglo American has a diamond in the rough. But it might not get credit for it until investors know just how rough the rest of the miner’s businesses will get. De Beers, the world’s largest diamond miner by value, is becoming more important to Anglo. The business generated more than one-third of Anglo’s underlying earnings in the first half, its biggest contributor. With a return on capital employed of 13%, up from 8% the previous year, De Beers’s performance is edging close to Chief Executive Mark Cutifani’s 15% target for Anglo for 2016. But Anglo’s sparklers don’t appear to dazzle investors.
