Fifty-thousand-year-old diamonds may be used to design ultra-hard yet malleable electronics
09 august 2022
(mining.com) - An international team of scientists discovered that diamonds formed during a high-energy shock wave from an asteroid collision around 50,000 years ago have unique and exceptional properties, caused by short-term high temperatures and extreme pressure. In a paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, the researchers say that these structures can be targeted for advanced mechanical and electronic applications because they provide the ability to design materials that are not only ultra-hard but also malleable with tunable electronic properties.
Is the US Jewelry Boom Waning?

(diamonds.net) - Bryan Moeller has enjoyed good business over the last year. In that time, the owner of R.F. Moeller Jeweler has seen his transactions and average ticket prices go up 6% and 27%, respectively. But he’s still nervous about the fourth quarter. “The past two years [of sales] have been beyond our expectations,” says Moeller, whose company has stores in Edina and Saint Paul, Minnesota. “But I know people who are holding off on home remodels, and I see a looming downturn because of key economic factors.”
Growing Diamonds, Saving the Planet

(idexonline.com) - There was much excitement last month when Lusix announced a $90m funding round, not least because LVMH was among the investors. The French luxury conglomerate now owns the iconic US jeweler Tiffany & Co. Lusix makes lab-grown diamonds. Tiffany has made its position clear on lab-growns, namely that it sees no role for them in a luxury brand. So the fact that its investment arm was joining the rush to be a part of Lusix's success raised some eyebrows. But that's a discussion for another time. What I find no less interesting is a detail that emerged in a subsequent conversation I had with Lusix CEO Dr Silviu Reinhorn about how the company uses nothing but solar power to create its diamonds. More than that, I discovered, Lusix actually generates surplus power that it puts into the grid for ordinary consumers.

03 august 2022
(scmp.com) - The metaverse is shadowing our physical reality ever more closely, and now it’s coming for our accessories. But how does the world of virtual jewellery connect with the collectors and customers in today’s real-world high jewellery clientele? Icecap, a blockchain-based NFT platform, appears to have the answer. Selling “investment-grade” diamonds on NFT marketplace OpenSea, they issue the buyer with an NFT that represents incontrovertible ownership of a physical asset stored in a secured vault.
