Exhibition dedicates to Russian diamond mining history

09 june 2023
An exhibition “The Way of the Diamond. A miracle of nature and a man-made masterpiece” opened at the State Historical Museum in Moscow. It is organized by the State Historical Museum with the support of ALROSA and is dedicated to the history of diamond mining in Russia, diamond cutting technologies and the skill of jewelers.
Visitors will be introduced to the properties of natural diamonds, the regions of their mining and real masterpieces of jewelry art.
For this exhibition, 60 of the rarest and most unique diamonds mined in the history of the diamond mining company were collected.
As the supervisior of the exhibition, Lyudmila Demidova, said, “these are large and colored crystals, most of which are named - the fact of their mining was given the names of prominent people or events.” In addition, the exhibition presents diamonds with a unique morphology - rare, amazing shapes that are of interest not only to professional gemologists. Including the famous Matryoshka diamond, as noted by Demidova, which received this name “due to its unique feature: another gem moves freely inside a larger diamond.”
Approximately every fourth diamond in the world is mined in Russia, and ALROSA not only mines rough diamonds, but also cuts them and creates diamond jewelry.
In addition to the exposition of unique diamonds, the exhibition consists of diamond and jewelry sections.
"Diamonds are called 'shards of stars' and 'frozen tears of the gods'," says Alexei Levykin, director of the Historical Museum. “As part of our exhibition, we will show the whole path that a diamond goes through from the moment it is mined to its transformation into a shining diamond and a beautiful piece of jewelry.”
Among the exhibits is a collection of 30 diamonds, the best achievements of Russian cutters, because despite technological progress, the skill of human hands and talent still play the most important role. Visitors will see a 14-carat pear-shaped yellow diamond, as well as replicas of the largest and most expensive diamonds cut in Russia: the Ghost of the Rose, the Firebird and The Spectacle.
The jewelry section includes jewelry with luminescent diamonds from ALROSA-Luminous and exclusive collections Designed by Carl Faberge and Imperium, created by the ALROSA Jewelry Group in cooperation with the State Hermitage Museum.
The exhibition is open until September 10 and is accompanied by a lecture and training program.
