By 2026-2027, the Democratic Republic of Congo should overtake Peru and become the second largest copper producer in the world, second only to Chile, which is the global leader with a production volume of 5.36 million tons in 2022.
Such an assessment is contained in the mining forecast prepared by the consulting company Wood Mackenzie, jeuneafrique.com reported.
According to expert estimates, the DRC produced 2.2 million metric tons of copper in 2022. This figure represents a more than sixfold increase in copper production in the country since 2010 and is 31% higher than the volume of 2021.
According to the Ministry of Mining of Peru, about 2.44 million tons of copper were produced in Peru in 2022.
