Lucara discovers yet another large diamond at Karowe

23 august 2023

Lucara Diamond has recovered a diamond weighing 692.3 carats at its wholly-owned Karowe diamond mine in Botswana.

The diamond, which is a Type IIa high-white gem, was found in the MDR XRT unit after directly milling ore obtained from the EM/PK(S) unit of the South Lobe.

“The recovery of large diamonds from the EM/PK(S) lithology of the South Lobe strongly supports our expectations for the underground project, where the majority of material mined will constitute this phase of kimberlite during the first years of Underground production," said Lucara’s new chief executive, William Lamb.

The 692.3-carat stone is the fourth diamond of over 300 carats diamond discovered this year.

It comes shortly after the recovery of a 1,080-carat Type IIa white top gem earlier in August.

Karowe has so far this year recovered 20 diamonds larger than 100 carats.
