At the 12th UN Forum “Business and Human Rights” in Geneva, Norilsk Nickel shared the information about the company's programs to advocate human rights and support indigenous peoples.
“In 2024, as part of the Norilsk Nickel's program to support the indigenous peoples of Taimyr, it is planned to build three cultural centers in the villages of Nosok, Volochanka, Kheta, purchase 15 apartments for orphans, and build a workshop for processing deer meat and fish in Dudinka,” said Alexander Shaburkin, the head of the analytical section of the Federal and Regional Programs Department of Norilsk Nickel on the sidelines of the forum.
Speaking to UN officials and experts, a representative of Norilsk Nickel noted that over the four years of implementation of the program, 15 rural houses and 3 medical and obstetric centers with housing to accommodate doctors were built in the villages of Ust-Avam, Volochanka, and Ust-Port. The company constructed the Visitor Center in the village of Ust-Avam, while 11 schools in remote villages of Taimyr were provided with satellite connection and sets of computer and office equipment as part of the implementation of an Internet education system. 2 refrigeration units were supplied to store and transport deer, fish, and poultry meat.
International experts showed great interest in the company’s Human Rights Report for 2022, as well as Norilsk Nickel’s experience in conducting the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) procedure in Tukhard.
