Norilsk Nickel is planning to create joint ventures (JVs) with Chinese manufacturers of battery materials - for both lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, said the president of the company Vladimir Potanin in an interview with Interfax.
“We are also improving the nickel chain, and we will advance both cobalt and lithium [ones],” he noted.
“At the same time, our Gipronickel Institute is studying our own capabilities for the production of battery materials.”
The company expects that partnerships will be differentiated: in the copper production segment, Norilsk Nickel plans to work with one partner, and in nickel and lithium materials - with others.
“Strategically, we believe that such partnerships have an important synergistic effect: we gain access to advanced technologies in industries important to the Russian Federation, and our partners have the opportunity to gain long-term contracts for raw materials for their enterprises,” continues Potanin.
“We proceed from the fact that we are entering international markets seriously and for a long time.”
