Norilsk Nickel upgrades its metallurgical plants to increase reliability, processing volumes

17 june 2024

MMC Norilsk Nickel is conducting modernization at two of its enterprises - Bystrinsky Mining and Processing Plant (MPP) and Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant (NMZ).

At the Bystrinsky MPP, the company is building a new rock crushing and grinding plant, which will increase processing volumes by 350,000 tons of copper ore per year. In addition, it is planned to build a gold extraction plant and a new production line, Bystra-2, with a capacity of 5 million tons of ore per year.

“As we developed the deposit, we discovered ore with gold content that exceeded the specified processing parameters. We began to store this ore in order to independently process it on a separate production line of the new factory, eventually,” said Artur Usmanov, director of capital construction projects at the Bystrinsky MPP.

Last year, the enterprise produced 11 million tons of ore, 3.8% more than in 2022. The production plan for the current year is 11.3 million tons of ore. The enterprise produces 64,000 - 68,000 tons of copper, 225,000 - 245,000 ounces of gold in concentrate and 1.5 - 1.7 million tons of iron in concentrate per year.

Norilsk Nickel also completed the process of dismantling the second flash smelting furnace and began installing a new smelting unit at NMZ as part of a large-scale reconstruction of pyrometallurgical production. This will significantly improve the reliability of the technological process.

A complete repair, including peripheral equipment, will take 60 days; more than 2,000 workers are involved in this process.
