Jeweller Fabergé has partnered with Gemfields to produce the unique Fabergé x Gemfields Malaika Egg, priced at $1.2 million.
GJEPC India reports that the Gemfields Foundation, the charitable arm of the Gemfields Group, will receive $100,000 from the egg sale to support community projects that alleviate poverty in Mozambique.
The rubies on this egg were discovered at the Montepuez mine in Mozambique.
The term "Malaika" translates to "angel" in Swahili.
White and brown diamonds, pink sapphires, amethysts, and pearls are included in the 18k rose gold setting with the rubies.
A small team of craftspeople in England utilized traditional methods to create the Malaika Egg.
The egg's exterior is a tribute to Mozambican rubies, including a symphony of red jewels, guilloché enamel, and other valuable gemstones in a pattern that resembles the feathers on an angel's wings. Upon closer examination, the design is shown to have meticulously designed gaps, which provide a peek of a Fabergé surprise.
The egg is created by combining 4,312 round brilliant-cut white diamonds and 252 round brilliant-cut brown diamonds, which enhance the colours of the 308 rubies inside. 421 round pink sapphires and 61 amethysts, all set in 18k rose gold, enhance these colours further.
“Colour is in Fabergé’s DNA and has always played a pivotal role in our creations,” said Fabergé chief executive Antony Lindsay.
“Often referred to as ‘the artist jeweller’, we like to ‘paint’ our creations with the finest coloured”.
