Merafe Resources produced 154,000 tonnes (t) of ferrochrome from South Africa’s Glencore Merafe Chrome Venture in the six months ending June 30, a 17% decline from 185,000 t recorded in the same period in 2023.
The drop in output was attributed to the mothballing of the Rustenburg smelter this year due to unfavourable market conditions.
Merafe, a junior empowerment partner in the chrome joint venture with Glencore, holds a 20.5% interest in the project.
The venture recorded a 26% decrease in first-quarter output to 77,000 t compared to the 103, 000 t produced in the first quarter of 2023.
It is expected to release full results in a fortnight.
