Ivanhoe Mines has recorded a fatal accident at the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

It said the accident occurred underground at the Kansoko mine when Bruno Akake Mutombo, a Kamoa Copper drill rig operator, was "struck by a fall of ground".

The emergency response team stabilised him before evacuating him to the hospital, but he later passed away from his injuries.

Ivanhoe said management has commenced a comprehensive review of the incident.

Kamoa Copper is also said to be working with the DRC authorities to facilitate their investigation of the accident.

Mining activities at Kansoko have since restarted after the company secured the area of the incident.
