Newmont’s president and CEO Tom Palmer became the new chairman of the International Council of Metals and Mining (ICMM), succeeding Iván Arriagada, CEO of Antofagasta Minerals.
“I am delighted to welcome Tom as our new Chair as we embark on our new strategy to drive responsible mining practices under a consolidated Standard while enhancing dialogue and engagement with our stakeholders. Tom has led by example in this regard, having Chaired ICMM’s Social Performance Advisory Group and through his genuine sustainability leadership within our industry,” said president and CEO of ICMM Rohitesh Dhawan.
“Newmont is a founding member of ICMM, sharing its vision for a safe, just and sustainable mining industry. I look forward to working closely with ICMM leadership, Council members, and the wider mining industry. My focus will be on building support across the sector for a consolidated mining standard. I believe this to be key to enhancing the reputation of the industry and give stakeholders confidence that the materials we mine are done so in a responsible manner,” Palmer said about his appointment.
ICMM is governed by its council which comprises the CEOs of its 24 member companies. The Chair is appointed from within this group and serves in the position for approximately two years.
