Newmont completes Akyem mine sale to Zijin with final $100m payment

04 august 2025

Ghana's parliamentary approval of the Akyem East mining lease has enabled Newmont to receive a final $100 million payment from China's Zijin Mining, concluding the sale of the Akyem gold operation.

The transaction now delivers $770 million in total after-tax proceeds to the U.S.-based mining giant.

With this divestiture finalised, Newmont expects to generate $3.1 billion in total divestment proceeds for 2025.

This includes $2.6 billion from asset sales and approximately $470 million from the sale of equity stakes in Greatland Resources and Discovery Silver.

The company plans to allocate these funds toward debt reduction and enhanced shareholder returns.

As the world's largest gold producer and a significant producer of copper, zinc, lead and silver, Newmont maintains operations across five continents, including Africa, Australia, Latin America, North America and Papua New Guinea.
