ALROSA has reported the discovery of a rare, gem-quality, Type IIb blue diamond weighing 2.74 carats, as it commenced the cutting and polishing process. This is the first diamond of this kind ever unearthed in Russia.
The company stated that the diamond was recovered from the Nakyn kimberlite field in Yakutia. This discovery confirms the presence of extremely rare, boron-containing Type IIb diamonds at the deposit and "opens new opportunities for studying the geological processes of diamond formation deep within the Earth."
"For the first time in our nation’s history, we have obtained such a unique blue crystal. This is a highly significant milestone for ALROSA and the entire diamond industry. It is possible that a find like this may never happen again," noted ALROSA CEO Pavel Marinychev.
According to the diamond miner, a team of 11 highly skilled ALROSA cutters and polishers have been working on the stone "throughout 2026."
"It is our responsibility to preserve the beauty created by nature and transform this exceptional diamond into a finished gem worthy of a place among the world’s rarest precious stones. It is especially significant that this work is being carried out by our own Russian craftsmen," Marinychev explained.
