Norilsk Nickel uses unique equipment for reclamation

27 july 2022
At the mouth of the Ambarnaya River, reclamation of the land affected by the fuel spill in May 2020 continues. Experts from the Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company (NTEK JSC) and Norilsk Nickel’s Land Improvement Operation are working on the territory of the miner’s Polar Division.
Around the clock, are involved in Land reclamation is going on around the clock using the efforts of 45 people and 20 units of equipment including 3 tracked dump trucks, a TREKOL all-terrain vehicle, 4 other-type all-terrain vehicles, 5 floating crafts and 7 motor cultivators. All equipment has minimal impact on the ground.
Reclamation at this site under a project approved by the administration of the city of Norilsk began last year, which saw the restoration of 17.43 hectares of polluted and 30.91 hectares of disturbed areas. In 2022, this work will be completed.
This year, the reclamation operations attracted three unique Morooka tracked dump trucks, which have a wide range of applications and make it possible to perform work in environmentally sensitive areas. Trucks are highly traversable and designed to operate in off-road areas that even the best wheeled all-terrain vehicles cannot reach. The equipment was purchased by Norilsk Nickel for its Land Improvement Operation working in the territory of the company’s Polar Division. The machines are equipped with recultivators that loosen the soil to a depth of 27 cm with a working width of 290 cm. One machine is equipped with a device for hydroseeding - more than 1,000 m2 of land is sown using one refueling, while the second has a peat spreader, which, in addition to the main functions, also crushes peat. The third machine is equipped with a manipulator for transporting materials. The uniqueness of this technique is that it minimally affects the soil cover.
In accordance with the reclamation project, grass mixture is sown with meadow clover, fescue and timothy grass. Alexander Vasyuk, Chief Engineer of NTEC JSC, commented: “The grass is taking root quite well. The plans for 2022 include 6.5 hectares of polluted and 20.91 hectares of disturbed lands. Those areas that are difficult to re-cultivate with caterpillar dump trucks due to their small area and remoteness, we re-cultivate manually using motor cultivators.”
