This conclusion was made by the ecologists of the Scientific Center for the Study of the Arctic who analyzed the results of long-term research on the hydro chemical composition of natural surface water in the peninsular. According to the Yamal government’s press release, laboratory data and scientific content collected by Yamal scientists since 2013 confirm that the hydro chemical water composition in the region has begun to improve, and the elimination of contaminant sources helps to reduce the amount of oil products.
“The maximum concentration is exceeded for manganese, iron, biological and chemical oxygen consumption, but this is due to the region’s natural specifics, in particular due to swamps, which determine the specific water composition in Arctic rivers and lakes,” says Roman Kolesnikov, a leading researcher in the environmental sector of the Center.
He will talk about the hydro chemical features of the Yamal rivers and lakes at the V International Conference "Resources, Environment and Regional Sustainable Development in Northeast Asia", which is taking place in Irkutsk from August 23 to 27. The conference is organized by the Russian, Chinese and Mongolian Academies of Sciences to discuss measures for conservation of the ecosystem impacted by the anthropogenic factor, as well as issues related to environmental development and strengthening environmental cooperation.
Roman Kolesnikov will also take part in the round table “Baikal Lake level: Impact on Ecosystem, Economy and Infrastructure of the Baikal Natural Territory”, where he will share the results of studying unique lakes Bolshoye Shchuchye and Khadatayoganlor in the Polar Urals. The Bolshoye Shchuchye lake, like Baikal, is of tectonic origin and contains a large amount of fresh water.
It is worth noting that the scientists of the Center implement a water monitoring project. The research meets the goals of the Year of Ecology in Yamal, announced by Governor Dmitry Artyukhov, as well as the national projects "Science and Universities" and "Ecology". The results are in demand to estimate water bodies for economic purposes and the development of environmental measures.
