Volunteers of Karelia cleared 60 km of river and lake banks

08 september 2022

Participants of the “Water of Russia” action have removed more than 27 tons of garbage this year, according to Go Arctic. In 2022, volunteers have already cleared about 60 km of the banks of Karelian rivers and lakes from garbage and wood debris.

Karelia annually joins the initiative of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia and cleaning operations take place in every region of the republic. Caring residents actively take part in the action so that the banks of the reservoirs that are next to them and often become favorite places for recreation and leisure become cleaner.

This year, the Olonets, Medvezhyegorsk and Kondopoga regions of the republic became the most active in cleaning works.

“We have already held eight subbotniks or litter pick days, the last one will be at the end of September. The action was supported by more than 100 people. These are schoolchildren, the Altair volunteer detachment, employees of the local administration and the State Inspectorate for Small Vessels. Volunteers removed the coastal strip of Lake Onega, Lake Plotichye, the banks of the Kumsa and Vichka rivers. In total, about 160 bags of garbage were collected. Thanks to everyone who helped clean up!” - said Natalya Glushneva, the deputy director of the administrative and economic center of the Medvezhyegorsk district.

The action "Water of Russia" will last until the end of the month. Anyone can take part in it.
