According to him, the reason lies in the absence of seasonal mixing of water layers, which is why these reservoirs are characterized by low productivity.
The academician explained that the ingress of mineral-free river water into marine reservoirs does not allow algae to bloom, which fish and other marine life feed on.
"Our work has shown that no matter how much the shelf of the Siberian Arctic is heated, no matter how early the seasonal ice is removed from it, biological products do not change significantly. This is due to the fact that the Arctic is negatively affected by river runoff <...> Due to the density stratification of the water column, seasonal convection, which ensures the active development of life, is extremely limited in the Siberian Arctic," Flint told TASS news agency.
