(interfax-russia.ru) - Since 2021, Nornickel has cleared Norilsk of 200 000 tons of scrap metal, also demolished 106 abandoned buildings, said Andrey Grachev, Vice President of the company for federal and regional programs, during a speech at the Arctic and Antarctic Days in Moscow International Forum 2022 on Friday.
"We do not suffer from territorial and production egoism and clean not only industrial sites, but also the city, the Norilsk industrial district, all adjacent territories. In total (during the implementation of the project - interfax) we planned to demolish more than 500 unused buildings. As a result, today we have 106 buildings already demolished, removed 200,000 tons of scrap metal," Grachev said.
He added that the company has also created a special unit that melts down the removed scrap metal on site for its further transportation to the mainland.
According to the official website of the project, Nornickel is implementing a large-scale Clean Norilsk program for sanitary cleaning of the Arctic territory and improvement of industrial areas. It is designed for 10 years. During the program, in particular, plans to remove about 500 abandoned buildings and structures, 2 million tons of waste and 600 000 tons of scrap metal.
