Norilsk Nickel to update Norilsk water supply system

17 april 2023
Norilsk Nickel has started solving one of the most pressing issues for Norilsk – ensuring guaranteed water supply to the population and industrial sites.
Instead of two outdated surface water intakes on the Norilsk River, one, modern and efficient, will appear,  ttelegraf.ru reports.
In recent years, the problem of low water on the Norilsk River, the most important source of water supply for the city and the company's industrial site, has become more complicated in Norilsk.
Due to the decrease in precipitation in the summer, the river becomes very shallow. Sometimes their number is only 30% of the previously observed long-term average values. This threatens the uninterrupted supply of water to the entire Norilsk Industrial district.
The natural anomaly creates great technical and production risks for Norilsk Nickel, which may arise due to the introduction of restrictions on both heat supply, drinking water supply to consumers of the residential sector, and lead to non-fulfillment of the production program.
Norilsk Nickel plans to invest about 13 billion rubles in the construction of a hydraulic structure.
The new water intake structure will be designed using the most modern technical solutions, taking into account the climatic features of Norilsk and in accordance with all applicable environmental requirements.
