Subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel conducts large-scale studies of the Norilo-Pyasinsky aquatic ecosystem

12 july 2023

The Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company (NTEC, a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel) and the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography have launched a fisheries research program in the Norilo-Pyasinsky water ecosystem.

Under the 2022 voluntary settlement agreement, NTEC, the Research Institute of Fisheries and the Yenisei Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Fishery agreed on damage control strategy related to losses to aquatic biological resources in 2020 as a result of an accident at the CHPP-3 power plant in Norilsk. In June this year, under this agreement, NTEC began releasing young Siberian sturgeon (Red Book fish) into the Yenisei river.

In 2023, scientists will conduct their work at Lake Pyasino, the Pyasina River and smaller water bodies, including Ambarnaya, Norilskaya, Daldykan, Agapa, Dudypta and others. The purpose of the research is to monitor the state of aquatic biological resources and their habitat, as well as to develop scientific recommendations for the replenishment of biological resources. The results of the research will include recommendations on the places and maximum possible volumes of valuable fish species to be released in the Norilsk region.

The head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, Ilya Shestakov, commented: "The scientific component plays a paramount role in fisheries, ecosystem conservation and biodiversity maintenance. The results obtained during the research will become the basis for further long-term work to restore the aquatic ecosystem and stocks of valuable whitefish in this region."
