ALROSA energy subsidiary transferred 5 mn kWh of green electricity under the Carbon Zero standard

24 july 2023

JSC Vilyuiskaya HPP-3, which is part of the ALROSA energy complex, has joined the Russian Carbon Zero standard for servicing environmental safety certificates. As part of the mechanism, the energy company transferred 5 million Carbon Zero green certificates for electricity produced in 2023 at its main energy asset, the Svetlinskaya HPP, to the first buyer - the Russian subsidiary of the international company KT&G (South Korea).

Certificates for the consumption of 5 million kWh for KT&G in Russia (an average annual amount) almost fully compensate for the company's carbon footprint, thus contributing to the development of the renewable energy sector in Russia.

The green certificate today is one of the most common means for industry to compensate for their CO2 emissions. It is an asset separated from electric power itself, and it allows to transfer all rights related to the positive effects of environmental and social outcomes of green energy usage from the producer to the buyer.

These certificates are a convenient and modern means for consumers in Russia that are not part of a wholesale electricity market and cannot regulate electricity consumption through bilateral agreements.
