Warming in the Arctic to cause a cold snap in Moscow in February – expert

17 august 2023

Global warming in the Arctic will lead to abnormal cold in Europe and Moscow. Such a disappointing forecast was voiced by Sergey Mukhametov, senior lecturer of the Department of Oceanology of the Geographical Faculty of Moscow State University.

According to him, powerful heat flows change the circulation of the atmosphere, which is why "ultrapolar invasions" in Europe will become more frequent.

The cold Arctic air will also reach Central Russia. Towards the end of winter, due to a powerful anticyclone, it will be colder in the center of the European part of Russia, for example, in Moscow in February, the expert claims.

Thus, Mukhametov noted, global warming will cause a "local cooling" in Western Europe, which will also affect the European part of Russia. But in Russia this phenomenon will not manifest itself as much as in the European Union, rg.ru writes.
