Waste collection competitions held in nine regions of the Arctic

Waste collection and garbage sorting competitions are held from August 26 to September 3 in all nine regions of the Russian Arctic as part of the third Arctic Cleanliness Cup, vmnews.ru reports.

This year, 4.000 participants are expected to take part in 53 events of the Arctic Cup. The tournament is held in two stages, the first was held in June, when 1.315 people collected about 40 tons of garbage at 25 events.

The first Arctic Cup was held in the summer of 2021 in Yamal, Murmansk Region, Nenets District, Karelia, Arkhangelsk region. 13 events took place, about 700 residents and 85 team members took part in them. In 2022, the tournament was held in nine regions, during which 2.500 residents and 447 team members took part in 44 events.

One of the goals of the competition is to attract indigenous peoples and involve them in environmental volunteering.
