Vadim Petrov, the head of the Public Council of Roshydromet, positively assessed the Sulfur Program, which was recently launched by Norilsk Nickel.
Norilsk Nickel launched pilot operation of the largest environmental project in Russia - the Sulfur Program - at the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant in Norilsk on October 25. The program is a comprehensive environmental project to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions.
“The sulfur program is part of the federal project “Clean Air” of the national project “Ecology” and is an important element of the socio-economic development of Siberia,” Petrov noted.
To implement this environmental project, the metallurgical plant underwent a partial reconfiguration and sulfur dioxide recycling facilities with the necessary infrastructure were built. As a result, 500 jobs were created. Investments amounted to more than 120 billion rubles. Construction lasted more than three years. Up to 4,000 workers and specialists were involved at the site around the clock, and more than 400 pieces of special equipment were used.
“This large-scale environmental project involves the capture and disposal of sulfur dioxide,” emphasized Vadim Petrov. “Today, Norilsk Nickel’s sulfur program is the most unique and largest environmental project in Russia.”
When the project reaches target capacity, it will make it possible to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions at the company's enterprises in Norilsk by 45% by 2025, from the base 2015 level.
