British scientists together with colleagues from other countries have revealed that warming in the Arctic may lead to the average global temperature overcoming the climatic threshold of 2 degrees Celsius 5-8 years earlier than expected.
The simulation showed that due to the increase in temperatures at the North Pole, the global milestone of 1.5 degrees Celsius will be passed in 2031, and the limit of 2 degrees Celsius will be reached in 2051 instead of 2036 and 2059, respectively.
The researchers also found that rapid warming in the Arctic region has added uncertainty to climate forecasts.
According to the co-author of the study Julien Strove from the Canadian University of Manitoba, warming in the Arctic region has global consequences, which include sea level rise and melting of permafrost, leading to large carbon emissions into the atmosphere, csn-tv.ru reports.
