The main cause of Arctic pollution is the so-called "waste storms", scientists from the Northern (Arctic) Federal University have established during the Arctic Floating University expedition, RIA Novosti reports.
The researchers found out that unlike other parts of the World Ocean, waste in the Russian Arctic does not accumulate on the surface of the water - it is thrown ashore during storms.
At the same time, despite the fact that the Russian authorities regularly clean out waste from the region, it continues to accumulate.
"Despite the annual cleaning, waste is actively accumulating. So, after the complete cleaning of the control landfills in 2021, in subsequent years there was a significant accumulation of new waste thrown out by the sea (up to 70-80% of the values of 2021)," the news agency quotes Alexandra Ershova, head of scientific work on the study of marine debris.
