The cultural heritage of indigenous peoples to be digitized

15 december 2023

The Northeastern Federal University (NEFU) has proposed to preserve the linguistic and cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic using digital technologies.

At the XIII International Forum "The Arctic: Present and Future", the head of the Department of the University Anatoly Jozhikov made presentations on the Arctic Council project "Digitalization of the linguistic and cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic".

"One of the ways to preserve cultural heritage is digitalization, thanks to which everything can be recorded and documented. I proposed integrating all disparate and large projects for the preservation and development of linguistic and cultural heritage around the Arctic Council's project "Digitalization of the linguistic and cultural heritage of the Indigenous peoples of the Arctic" using the GIS map of languages and cultural heritage platform developed by Rosreyestr and Roskadaster," said Jozhikov.

The NEFU project on digitalization of the heritage of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic is being implemented within the framework of the Priority 2030 program of the national project "Science and Universities". This is a multicultural Internet portal, where 3D models of cultural and historical objects, a unified online knowledge base, and a GIS map of indigenous languages are collected. Work on it is still underway, but according to plans in 2024, experts will reach the final stage, ttelegraf.ru reports.
