Almost 850 tons of scrap metal collected in Yakutia as part of the Arctic cleanup project

19 december 2023

More than 31 hectares were cleared of scrap metal in Yakutia as part of the Clean Arctic project from 2021 to 2023, the press service of the government of the republic reported.

"About 800 volunteers collected approximately 850 tons of scrap metal," the administration said.

The Clean Arctic project was launched in Yakutia in August 2021. First of all, volunteers, together with servicemen of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, cleared the territory near the village of Tiksi of scrap metal. Then they collected 300 tons of waste on an area of 8 hectares.

In 2022, employees of Yanolovo JSC and local residents joined the campaign. They cleared a 5-hectare site, collecting 200 tons of scrap metal. Later that year, the campaign was supported by other Yakut enterprises.

In 2023, Yakutia organized a total of three expeditions within the framework of the Clean Arctic project.

"Next year, the geography of the Clean Arctic project will be expanded. We plan our activities in Tiksi and the village of Naiba, the villages of Batagai and Eshaya, Zhigansk, in Chokurdakh, in the villages of Ust-Kuiga and Nizhneyansk," said Sergey Neustroev, First Deputy Minister for Arctic Development and Affairs of the Peoples of the North of Yakutia.

According to local authorities, all collected scrap metal is subject to recycling, krsk.sibnovosti.ru reports.
