The state permafrost monitoring system now includes nine background monitoring wells located on the territory of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, the Yamal-Arctic Telegram channel reported.

"By now, more than 70 wells have been drilled evenly on the territory of Yamal. Nine of them were drilled this year in accordance with the standards of Roshydromet. Our specialists were the first in Russia to initiate their inclusion in the state observation system," the publication says.

The first in the background monitoring system was the Salekhard well, it was drilled on the territory of the oldest meteorological station in Siberia and put into operation in May this year.
