A scientist from Kazan Federal University discovered a new species of octopus during international research expeditions in the Arctic. It was named after the Old Norse god of the sea Aegir (Muusoctopus aegir in Latin), the university reports.
A new species of cephalopod was first discovered between Northern Ireland and Svalbard, and later its distribution was established throughout almost all of the Arctic basin.
Muusoctopus aegir lives at depths of more than 600 meters, where the water temperature does not exceed 0.4 degrees Celsius, Interfax reports.
