Microplastic found in tissues of walruses in Alaska

The scientists from the University of Alaska at Fairbanks (USA) revealed that tiny microplastic particles, mainly in the form of fibers, are stuck in muscle tissue, fat deposits and liver of animals in the region.

Although the exact mechanism of plastic particles entering the body tissues of walruses is still unclear, the discovery indicates that plastic debris is penetrating deeper into the marine ecosystem, even in such remote areas as the Chukchi Sea.

The consequences of the presence of microplastics in the body tissues of walruses are still unknown. Studies are planned to clarify its effect on the biological wellbeing of these animals.

The discovery will not only help to understand the impact of microplastics on marine mammals, but will also help to take measures to reduce pollution of the oceans with plastic debris, ecosphere.press writes.
