Far North marine cargo transportation operator fined for pollution of the Yenisei

19 march 2024

The Prosecutor's Office of the Krasnoyarsk Territory issued a fine of 4.6 million rubles to the Arctic Consulting Service freight forwarding company for pollution of the Yenisei river with petroleum products.

In September 2022, the company pumped petroleum products from tank containers to a fuel tanker in the village of Dixon in violation of security measures. As a result, an oil spill occurred on an area of about 130 square meters in the Yenisei water protection zone.

Arctic Consulting Service, which has been carrying out sea transportation to the Far North for ten years, refused to reimburse the damage according to the order voluntarily. Therefore, it was brought to court to collect the fine.

Earlier, an oil slick about 100 meters long was discovered in the waters of the Yenisei River in Krasnoyarsk. Before that, there was an oil depot in that area. After its liquidation, underground oil product storage facilities remained near the shore. There are plans to recultivate the area, octagon.media reports.
